What Is a Dental Operating Microscope?
A dental operating microscope is a high-precision optical instrument that magnifies the surgical field by 2× to 25× — far beyond what the naked eye or even loupe magnification (typically 2.5×–4.5×) can achieve. It combines this magnification with a powerful coaxial light source that illuminates thetooth’s interior with shadow-free, perfectly aimed light.

Do I feel anything different when the microscope is being used?
No — the microscope changes nothing for the patient. It’s positioned a comfortable distance from your face, doesn’t touch you, and doesn’t interfere with treatment. Most patients don’t even realise it’s in use.
Will my root canal be more successful with the microscope?
Yes — significantly. Multiple studies show microscope-aided endodontics achieves success rates around 90–95%, compared to 70–85% without microscope vision. Hidden canals, tiny cracks and subtle pathology that would otherwise be missed are reliably identified and treated.
Is the microscope only used for root canals?
No — though endodontics is its most transformative use. We also use it for endodontic retreatment, apicoectomy (root-tip surgery), precision restorative work, diagnosis of cracked teeth, and detailed peri-implant or periodontal procedures.
Can I see what you see during my treatment?

Does using the microscope make treatment more expensive?

Why don't all dentists use the microscope?
It’s expensive equipment, requires extensive training to use effectively, and slows down treatment in the short term (while enabling better outcomes in the long term).
