Inlay
What Is an Inlay?
An inlay is a restoration made of porcelain or high-strength composite resin, custom-made in a dental laboratory to match the exact dimensions of your cavity, then bonded onto the tooth. Unlike a conventional filling placed directly into the tooth, an inlay is made externally and offers greater precision and durability.
What's the Difference between Inlay or Onlay
- Inlay: covers the inner area of the tooth (between the cusps).
- Onlay: also covers one or more of the tooth's cusps (peaks).
When an Inlay Is Recommended
- When damage exceeds 1/3 of the tooth's surface
- When there isn't enough healthy tooth structure for a safe filling
- To replace large old metal fillings
- When you want a more durable and aesthetic outcome than a standard filling
The Placement Procedure
1st appointment:
Removal of decay/old material, digital impression and placement of a temporary restoration.
2nd appointment:
Try-in, bonding of the inlay and final bite check.
Benefits
- Preserves more healthy tooth structure than a crown
- High resistance to chewing forces
- Natural appearance — virtually invisible
- Doesn't stain over time
- Excellent fit = less risk of recurrent decay

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Inlay or filling — which is better?
For small cavities, a filling is ideal. For medium-to-large cavities, an inlay offers greater precision, durability and aesthetics. Your dentist will recommend the best option after examination.
How long does an inlay last?
With proper care and regular check-ups, a porcelain inlay lasts 10–15 years or longer.
How many appointments do I need?
Usually 2 appointments — one for preparation and impression, one for bonding. About 7–10 days between appointments.
Is the procedure painless?
Yes, it’s performed under local anaesthesia. You may experience mild sensitivity for 1–2 days after placement.
Are inlays suitable for children?
Children typically receive white fillings. In specific cases, an inlay may be recommended — this is evaluated by Dentistar’s Paediatric Dentistry team.
