What Is an Inlay?
An inlay is a restoration made of porcelain or high-strength composite resin, custom-made in a dental laboratory to match the exact dimensions of your cavity, then bonded onto the tooth. Unlike a conventional filling placed directly into the tooth, an inlay is made externally and offers greater precision and durability.
What's the Difference between Inlay or Onlay
- Inlay: covers the inner area of the tooth (between the cusps).
- Onlay: also covers one or more of the tooth's cusps (peaks).
When an Inlay Is Recommended
- When damage exceeds 1/3 of the tooth's surface
- When there isn't enough healthy tooth structure for a safe filling
- To replace large old metal fillings
- When you want a more durable and aesthetic outcome than a standard filling
The Placement Procedure
1st appointment:
Removal of decay/old material, digital impression and placement of a temporary restoration.
2nd appointment:
Try-in, bonding of the inlay and final bite check.

Are inlays suitable for children?
